Band Spotlight: VNLVX

Hailing from Ventura, these veterans of the 805 scene are no strangers to the area. Featuring former members of Massenger, former vocalist and bassist reunited to create VNLVX. In case you are wondering how to pronounce this their EP titled Is Unlux gives us this insight. Not much of a riddle but if you actually take a look at their track listing all instances of the letter “u” are replaced with “v’s” which you can review and listen to further from the stream below. All that aside, this band stands powerfully on their own and they pack such a powerful punch that it’s a bit hard for me to pin them down to a genre. According to their Bandcamp page, the music tags for VNLVX range from alternative to post-hardcore punk. They are assembling a sound that is pushing the boundaries of their genres.

I have had the pleasure of seeing this band live a few times and most recently on January 17, 2019 where they played at old town Goleta’s Mercury Lounge with fellow Ventura locals The Spires. I have seen songs from Is Unlux performed a few times however, at last weeks show I had the thrill of seeing them perform new songs. You’ll notice Is Unlux contains songs that range from slow melodic tempos to fast speeds and include lyrics sung in English and Spanish. The new songs really brought out the bands potential by incorporating their flair of hardcore with vocalist Sasha howling/belting melodic tones into the mic accompanied by droney guitars and heavy hitting drums. I am extremely excited to see what is to come of this band and with the showcase of these new songs hope that there is also a new album on the way. In the meantime, you can stream their debut album Is Unlux below or directly on Bandcamp:

My Top Tracks: “Psychic Vampires”, “Only Yov”, “Lies”
