The UCSB Jazz Ensemble will explore the music of Duke Ellington’s “Far East Suite” and a sampling of Charles Mingus’ output on Wednesday, March 11, 2020 at 7:30 pm in Lotte Lehmann Concert Hall. Mingus, a Los Angeles native (hence “near west”) admired and drew inspiration from Ellington’s early work, and was no doubt aware of the multi-movement suites of Ellington and artistic partner Billy Strayhorn. Mingus tunes to be performed include “Fables of Faubus,” “Slop,” “Nostalgia in Times Square,” and the haunting “Goodbye Porkpie Hat.” Jon Nathan, in his 25th year with the UCSB Jazz Ensembles, directs.
